Energy audits are now compulsory for companies!

The renewal of the Energy Services Law serves the purpose of adapting national law to the requirements of Article 8 of the EU Energy Efficiency Directive. The guideline has the purpose of creating a shared framework of measures for supporting energy efficiency in the European Union. This aims to ensure that the overriding goal of increasing energy efficiency of the European Union by 20% by the year 2020 is achieved, and further energy efficiency improvements are prepared for the following period.

The Energy Services Law obligates large companies to allow the completion of their first energy audit according to DIN EN 16247-1 by 5th December 2015 at the latest.  The energy audit has to be carried out by a professional and independent auditor who then certifies the correct completion of the audit to the legislator.

Small and medium sized companies that have fewer than 250 employees and an annual turnover that does not exceed 50 million Euros or an annual balance sheet total of a maximum of 43 million Euros are excluded from the energy audit.

After the initial analysis, the audit must then be completed again every four years. As an alternative to an energy audit, an energy management system according to ISO 50001, or an environmental management system pursuant to the EMAS, are also acknowledged by the legislator.
